The SanDisk brand is upgrading the Extreme and Extreme Pro Portable SSDs by doubling the data transfer speeds over the last generation models.

The Extreme Portable SSD can now reach read speeds of 1050MB/s and write speeds of 1000 MB/s. Meanwhile, the Extreme Pro model can hit 2000MB/s transfer rates for both read and write. Both products go on sale today over the Western Digital store.

SanDisk’s parent, Western Digital, is marketing the NVMe drives to photographers, videographers and heavy-duty users who are constantly taking images or 4K/8K video content, and need extra space to offload the data.

To enable the 2000 MB/s transfer rate on the Extreme Pro, the drive has been fitted with a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 port. The higher transfer speed on the Extreme Pro may mean the SSD drives will get warm when moving data. However, Western Digital says the product comes housed inside an aluminum chassis, which can dissipate the heat.

Both the Extreme and Extreme Pro are small enough to fit in a pocket. They come fitted with a USB-C port to enable access for both laptops and smartphones. But if you’re using an older Windows PC or Mac, the products come bundled with a USB-C to USB-A cable.

The exterior silicone casing around the drives have also been designed to survive drops from up to two meters. Both drives have an IP55 rating, meaning they can withstand low pressure water from any direction.

The portable drives are designed for both home use and when on the go. But if you’re looking for a sleeker design, you can consider Western Digital’s My Passport SSDs, which come in a metallic case. In August, the company also upgraded the products with faster transfer speeds.
