Imagine a tiny little SD card with a half-terabyte of storage. It might sound insane, but it’s happening.

Meet the new SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I. Launched Friday, the ittly bitty storage device can hold 512GB of data, making it the world’s highest-capacity SD card on the market.

SanDisk said it designed the card for those who shoot 4K Ultra High Definition video, Full HD video, and high-speed burst mode photography.

“4K Ultra HD is an example of a technology that is pushing us to develop new storage solutions capable of handling massive file sizes,” Dinesh Bahal, vice president of product marketing at SanDisk, said in a statement. “The 512GB SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I card is a tremendous advancement that enables professionals to reliably store more content on a single card than ever before.”

The company said the Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I is its most powerful and highest capacity SD card yet, delivering write speeds up to 90 MB/s, and UHS Speed Class 3 recording speeds for “high resolution, real-world color and stutter-free 4K Ultra HD video.” It also boasts transfer speeds up to 95 MB/s for quick post-production.

Shooting in harsh conditions? No worries. The card is temperature-proof, waterproof, shock-proof, and x-ray-proof.

SanDisk unveiled its first 512MB SD card in 2003, meaning the new card represents a 1,000-fold capacity increase in just over a decade, the company said.

But if you want this tiny powerhouse, you better have some deep pockets, because it costs $800. If that’s a little steep, SanDisk is also offering versions with 256GB and 128GB of storage.
