Data storage firm Seagate on Monday launched what it claims to be the “world’s fastest” 6TB hard disc drive.

The Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD v4 boasts(Opens in a new window) an operating speed of 7200 rpm, making it around 25 percent faster than any competing 6TB drive on the market, Seagate said in a news release. The new large capacity hard disc drive was specifically designed to meet exploding corporate data storage needs, according to Seagate’s vice president of marketing, Scott Horn.

“Unstructured data growth is doubling exponentially and will propel the digital universe to reach 16 Zettabytes of data by as early as 2017,” Horn said in a statement, citing data from IDC. “This will cause cloud service providers to look for innovative ways to store more within an existing footprint while lowering operational costs. Seagate is poised to address this challenge by offering the fastest 6TB enterprise capacity HDD based on our proven, reliable platform meeting this never-ending demand in both private and public cloud data centers.”

The 3.5-inch drive, which is FIPS SED certified, also comes in 5TB, 4TB, and 2TB flavors, with either 12Gb/s SAS or 6Gb/s SATA connectivity for easy system integration. For added security and reliability, the drive is self-encrypting with Seagate’s Instant Secure Erase and has a humidity sensor that allows it to function in “even the harshest environments.” It is compliant with the T10 and T13 power management standards, allowing organizations to customize their systems for optimal energy use, offering up to 90 percent more power savings.

The Seagate Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD v4 is now shipping to cloud partners and resellers globally, but there’s no word on pricing. It will also be integrated into Seagate’s business and branded storage products beginning this spring.
