If you work in an office, your employer has probably provided a “good enough” monitor to do your day-to-day work on, but upgrading can decrease eye strain and give you more space to work at a better resolution. And if you don’t have a second screen yet? Add one ASAP: You’ll be amazed at how much it improves the workday.

Some monitors have built-in smart streaming platforms for binging after hours, while gaming-specific monitors let you switch from spreadsheets to shooters once you go on Do Not Disturb.

If it’s been a while since your last monitor upgrade, 4K resolution is nice to have but for most document, spreadsheet, and web-based work, a 1080p screen is probably good enough. Similarly, a 60Hz refresh rate is adequate, but if you’re going to be gaming on this screen, look for a 75Hz minimum, preferably 144Hz. Brightness is important if you’ve got a sunlit office or are working in a coffee shop; look for something at or above 350 nits.

We probably wouldn’t recommend anything smaller than a 27-inch screen unless you’re working with some very limited desk space. If eyestrain is an issue, you may want to look into a curved screen; their slight bend makes it easier to view over long periods. Most screens also now have automatic brightness adjustment and blue-filter options to help take it easier on your eyeballs.

One final thing to consider: If your computer has an HDMI output, you could also use a regular TV as a primary or secondary screen, and we’ve found plenty of deals for those as well.

Acer SB220Q

Acer SB220Q 21.5-Inch 1080p IPS Monitor

This base-level Full HD monitor is smaller than most at just 21.5 inches, but you get an above-average refresh rate of 75Hz and an incredible contrast ratio of 100,000,000: 1. The ultra-thin design means it won’t take up much desk real estate and the included stand allows you to adjust the screen for your viewing comfort. We probably wouldn’t use this as our main display, but it’s the right price for a second screen or a backup panel.

FAQ

Where can I get the best deal on a computer monitor?

Amazon and Walmart are reliable stores for monitor deals, but don’t forget about Newegg, too. If you’re a Dell fan, you can often snag a deal directly from the PC maker, especially if you’re bundling it with a PC purchase.

Which computer monitor brand is best?

Our roundup of the best computer monitors is dominated by Dell and its Alienware gaming brand. But our most recent Readers’ Choice survey for monitors crowned Asus as the brand to beat.

Which monitor is best for daily use?

The Dell UltraSharp 27 4K USB-C Hub Monitor (U2723QE) is our pick for best overall business monitor. It isn’t cheap, but it delivers loads of connection and adjustment choices, amping up an extra-poppy panel with wide color gamut and superb contrast. For something more affordable, we like the HP 24mh 23.8-Inch Display.
