ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD Review

[ad_1]

If you’re looking for a basic, entry-level 1440p gaming monitor that can perform on par with displays twice its price, the $313.99 ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD hits those marks and more. While neither its styling nor its adjustability rate as highly as many other gaming monitors we’ve tested, this 27-inch panel’s performance and image quality is up there with some of the best, like the $799 Razer Raptor 27. Those on the hunt for gaming extras, fancy RGB lighting, or a friendly onscreen display (OSD) menu should consider alternatives like ViewSonic’s $599 Elite XG270QG. But if you’re on a budget and care more about gaming wins and gorgeous images than fancy frills, the VX2768-2KP-MHD does a dazzling-enough job to earn an Editors’ Choice award as an affordable 1440p gaming monitor.

The Basics on a Budget

The ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD is a 27-inch monitor with WQHD (2,560-by-1,440-pixel) resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, built around an IPS panel. The display is mounted on a small V-shaped metal stand with just one option for adjustability—tilting between -3 and 21 degrees, with no height adjustment or pivot between portrait and landscape modes. However, the display is compatible with VESA mounts and relatively light at just 11.5 pounds.

The monitor would probably be a better match for a wall mount or a more flexible desk mount than the bare-bones supplied stand. However, the included option is sturdy enough to serve its purpose as long as you aren’t craning your neck down to look at it.

The back of the monitor is all business, with a matte-black finish and no accents save the VESA mounting hardware. (RGB-light-loving gamers should look to other winners in ViewSonic’s catalog for that kind of styling.) The two 2-watt speakers beneath the display will serve in a pinch, but don’t expect to hear much bass.

ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD back 1

The minimal onscreen display (OSD) menu is controlled by four buttons at bottom right. We found some basic built-in color profiles and the option to change brightness and contrast, but no color calibration is possible apart from using the built-in Cinema and Photo modes.

As for ports, ViewSonic keeps things minimal with just two HDMI 2.0 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4b input, and a 3.5mm headphone jack for use with the HDMI audio pass-through. The AC power connector is found at the left rear of the display.

Testing the ViewSonic: Looks Can Be Deceiving

As mentioned, this 1440p display features a standard IPS panel with a native refresh rate of 144Hz (with no refresh-rate overclocking supported). We put the VX2768-2KP-MHD through our standard gaming monitor test regimen using a Datacolor SpyderX Elit(Opens in a new window)e(Opens in a new window). Here’s what we saw:

Testing the display in the default picture mode with an SDR signal, the ViewSonic managed a peak brightness of 384.4 nits (it’s rated for 350 nits) and a black level of 0.36 nit, which works out to a contrast ratio of 1,070:1. That’s excellent for a monitor in this price class, and is another score that edges above the vendor’s rating (1,001:1 contrast).

ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD brightness

Since it’s a budget display, we weren’t expecting much from the VX2768-2KP-MHD in terms of color coverage. That makes its respective results of 100% coverage of sRGB, 89% of Adobe RGB, and 96% of DCI-P3 all the more surprising. These are figures we’d expect from photo monitors priced well above the $300 mark, so to see them from a gaming display in this price range is another point in ViewSonic’s favor.

ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD gamut

Coming off those stellar gamut results, the ViewSonic’s Delta E average of 1.52 in color-accuracy testing was within expectations.

We suspect this number could be tuned down further using the in-menu OSD configuration options.

Media and Gaming Performance

With quantitative testing out of the way, we moved onto our content and gaming evaluations.

In SDR, our 4K Costa Rica test footage(Opens in a new window) (output at 1440p to match the monitor’s native resolution) looked incredible, considering the monitor’s cost. Colors were rich, and contrast was as good as you’d expect from an IPS panel. This is an area where IPS rarely stumbles. Fast-paced action and multiplayer gaming, however…what about that, though?

ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD gaming performance

(Photo: Chris Stobing)

For testing traditional input lag (the amount of time between when a monitor receives a signal and the screen updates), we use an HDFury 4K Diva(Opens in a new window) HDMI matrix. Given a 60Hz test signal, the VX2768-2KP-MHD entered the growing echelon of panels at all prices that hit the limits of our hardware detection, registering simply as sub-1-millisecond of input lag.

To see how that low input lag felt in action, I tried a few rounds of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Valorant, and Overwatch. Happily , all three games showed almost no ghosting and very minimal screen tearing thanks to the intelligent inclusion of AMD’s FreeSync Premium certification. AAA games like Red Dead Redemption 2 also looked stellar, thanks to the ViewSonic’s strong contrast ratio and higher brightness figures.

ViewSonic Keeps the Quality High and Cost Low

Like other members of ViewSonic’s VX family, the VX2768-2KP-MHD sheds almost every extra in the book in favor of hitting a strong cost-to-picture-quality ratio. In that effort, we’d say it gets 90% of the way there. It was a pleasant surprise that the minimal cost impact of adding FreeSync Premium compatibility netted such strong results in gaming, and the VX2768-2KP-MHD’s color coverage was class-leading right out of the box.

The VX2768-2KP-MHD is the very definition of “don’t judge a panel by its cabinet.” As long as you’re okay with adding the cost of a separate VESA mount to your shopping cart, there’s almost nothing this monitor can’t do just as well as much more costly entries in the gaming arena. Whether it’s for general content watching, AAA gameplay, or multiplayer matches, this ViewSonic’s size, responsiveness, and vivid picture make it one of the best mainstream gaming monitors we’ve tested in some time. (If you want to see a list of lots of other monitors the ViewSonic VX2768-2KP-MHD puts to shame, head on over to our complete monitor coverage.)
