When Google unveiled its LTE Chromebook Pixel last year, buyers were promised 100MB of free data per month via Verizon for at least two years. Some users, however, saw that free data disappear after just one year, and Google is now offering a $150 credit to irritated consumers.

Computerworld’s JR Raphael this week reported(Opens in a new window) that his free data disappeared recently, with the Internet-connected laptop offering only paid options past the one-year mark. He pointed to Google’s press site(Opens in a new window), which promises the free data for up to three years rather than two.

Other users reported the same thing on the Google forums(Opens in a new window), but Raphael was initially unable to get any answers from Verizon or Google Play support personnel.

Yesterday, a Boston-based law firm said it has started an investigation(Opens in a new window) into a potential breach of contract, fraudulent misrepresentations, and/or violations of state consumer protection laws over the issue.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but a spokesperson told Raphael(Opens in a new window) today that he and other Pixel owners are eligible for a $150 credit. Google will not be sending these funds out proactively; you will need to contact Google Play support and request it. But those who do will get a $150 Visa card to cover data costs.

Google didn’t offer any reason for the data shutdown, telling Raphael that the issue was “outside of our control.”

The 64GB LTE Chromebook costs $1,449, and sports a 12.85-inch, 2,560-by-1,700 display with 239 pixels per inch. For more, see PCMag’s review of the Chromebook Pixel, as well as our roundup of The Best Chromebooks.
