HP today signaled that it is willing and able to go toe to toe with Dell’s Alienware gaming line by resurrecting the Omen brand name that it acquired when it bought VoodooPC in 2006.
The new HP Omen(Opens in a new window) is a 15.6-inch laptop with gaming components, including an Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics.
The notebook is built around a 1,920-by-1,080-resolution touch-screen IPS display, an Intel Core i7-4710HQ processor, 8GB of memory, a 256GB SSD, and a 2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU. Styling is subdued and dark, consisting of an entirely black chassis and a backlit chiclet keyboard with a one-piece touchpad. Customizable lighting effects cover seven zones, including portions of the keyboard and the backlit speaker grills. A row of six programmable function keys will help gamers with weapon loads or switching input setups.
The ports in the back of the laptop include Ethernet (via dongle), a headset jack, one HDMI, one mini DisplayPort, and four USB 3.0 ports. HP kept the sides clear of ports so nothing will impede the mouse or joystick clearance.
Portability is a priority: HP says it weighs 4.68 pounds and provides 4 hours and 45 minutes of battery life.
Three main base units will be available starting at $1,499 with a 128GB SSD. HP is pricing the 256GB SSD model at $1,599, and $1,699 for an upgraded 4GB of memory for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 860M GPU. Other options will be available on HP’s Omen website, including a 16GB memory upgrade, 512GB SSD, a gaming mouse, and a branded gaming backpack.
