HP wants in on the growing student tablet market.

To that end, the Palo Alto-based PC maker has introduced the HP Pro Slate 10 EE and HP Pro Tablet 10 EE with a rugged, durable design that passes IP52 testing so it can survive drops, splashes, and students. Like Google’s Chromebooks, it’s also affordable.

The HP Pro Tablet 10 EE G1 is equipped with an Intel Atom Z3735G processor, 1-2GB of memory, and a 32-64GB SSD boot drive. It’s designed to work on your school 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi network and with Bluetooth 4.0 devices. HP Pro Tablet 10 EE G1This Windows 8.1-based tablet will ensure compatibility with any legacy apps you use in your classrooms, and can be managed by HP Services for Schools, HP School Pack, and HP Classroom Manager software packages (available separately to school administrators).

The tablet has a 10.1-inch screen with 1,280-by-800 resolution, with a capacitive multi-touch screen with digitizer. The Pro Tablet 10 EE G1 can be equipped with an optional stylus or hard-wired keyboard base, which turns the slate tablet into a 2-in-1 detachable tablet that acts like a traditional laptop. Other options include an Intel Atom Z3735F processor (for 2GB configurations), HSPA+ 4G cellular networking, and an HP Tablet Charging Module that can store, secure, and charge up to 10 tablets at a time. The Pro Tablet 10 EE G1 starts at $299 for education customers, and $349 for everyone else.

HP Pro Slate 10 EE G1The HP Pro Slate 10 EE G1 is almost identical physically, and has similar components, except that the Pro Slate 10 EE runs Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. If your school has standardized on Android apps, this may be a better fit.

Processor and system memory configurations are identical to the Pro Tablet 10 EE, but the Slate 10 EE systems come with either 16GB or 32GB of SSD storage. This is due to the smaller storage requirements of Android system files and apps. HP also offers HP Services for Schools, HP School Pack, and HP Classroom Manager packages for Android customers. The Pro Slate 10 EE G1 starts at $279 for educators and consumers.
