Before smartphones, tablets, laptops there were typewriters. The bulky writing machines might be a thing of the past, but would the novelty of a typewriter be enough to convince a modern-day kid to ditch their tablet? Probably not.
The Fine Brothers, who produce the popular “Kids React to …” series on YouTube, recently asked kids ages 6 to 13 their impressions of a typewriter. Somewhat surprisingly, most of the kids actually knew what the bulky writing device was — from seeing it on TV.
“I forget what it’s called, but it’s a special type of machine,” said 8 year-old Emma.
When asked how it works, 7-year old Evan was on the right track. “I think you put a piece of paper in there,” he said, pointing to the top. “Or does it provide paper? I don’t know.”
Most of the kids were befuddled when it came to actually loading the paper into the machine. But once they got a little help, the kids were eager to try it out. Their impressions of the relic?
“It’s loud,” said 13 year-old Troy.
“It looks really ancient, oh my gosh,” said 11 year-old Jayka.
The kids were also unimpressed by the lack of features on a typewriter. No easy way to erase your mistakes? No copy and paste shortcuts? Forget about it.
“Thank god we have iPads now, seriously,” said Troy.
So would they ditch their tablets and laptops for a typewriter? The reviews were mixed.
“I love this. I would like to keep this, actually,” said Emma, adding that it’s better than a computer because it uses up less electricity.
Jayka wasn’t as impressed. “I would not want to use this thing,” she concluded.
And how do they feel for people who actually had the misfortune of growing up at a time when typewriters were the only option?
“I feel very sad for them,” said 6-year-old Lucas. “They can’t FaceTime, they can’t do messages, they can’t do work, they can’t play games.”
