10 Upcoming AT&T Phones

Is Apple’s iPhone 5 not doing it for you? Don’t worry, AT&T’s here to help. Over the past few weeks, the nation’s second-largest carrier has shown us a wide variety of other smartphones it plans to introduce mostly between now and mid-November, running on either Google’s Android OS or Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8.

Their prices and release dates haven’t yet been announced, but we’ve gotten our hands on them and we can tell you that they all look promising. They range from a rugged, affordable Android phone to big, glossy Windows phones. AT&T has also showed off Windows 8 tablets and even an Android-powered camera, the Samsung Galaxy Camera, which it will be selling with a contract. I took some shots with the 16-megapixel Galaxy Camera and was especially amazed by its 21x optical zoom.

All of these phones run on AT&T’s super-fast LTE network, which the carrier has been expanding aggressively recently. The network is available in 72 markets, and AT&T is aiming for 100 by the end of the year. Most major U.S. cities should be covered by then. In our Fastest Mobile Network tests earlier this year, we found that AT&T’s LTE network had the fastest download speeds of any U.S. carrier.

We’ve heard less about the other big carriers’ plans for the fall, but here’s what we do know: Verizon is getting HTC’s Windows Phone 8X and possibly the 8S, along with Motorola’s Droid Razr HD and Razr Maxx and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Sprint is getting the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and LG Optimus G. T-Mobile will pick up the 8X, maybe the 8S, and the Galaxy Note 2. MetroPCS is getting the already-successful Samsung Galaxy S III. AT&T has locked down the Nokia Lumia 920 as an exclusive, but other carriers can still pick up the lower-cost 820. There are plenty of other rumors floating around out there.

For now, though, AT&T owns the future. Click through the story to see ten impressive upcoming AT&T smartphones we’ve handled recently.

1. HTC One X+

HTC One X+

HTC’s upcoming Android flagship is all about elegance, with a matte black polycarbonate body and a great-looking 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 screen. Running Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean,” it’ll be the first U.S. LTE phone with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor, which gives it access to exclusive games. It’s also really light.

2. HTC One VX

HTC One VX

HTC’s midrange entry, the One VX, offers excellent build quality with a respectable set of specs, including a 5-megapixel camera and 960-by-540, Super LCD screen. This phone runs Android 4.0, but HTC promises an upgrade to Android 4.1.

3. HTC Windows Phone 8X

HTC Windows Phone 8X

HTC’s attractive Windows Phone 8 comes in a range of colors and its unique “pyramid” design tapers at the edges. The phone has Beats Audio and HTC’s own image chip, which HTC hopes will set it apart from Nokia’s also-colorful, competing devices. We went hands-on with this phone in September.

4. Nokia Lumia 820

Nokia Lumia 820

Nokia’s midrange Windows Phone, the 820 will come with removable polycarbonate backs. You can change the color of the phone at whim, and if the device is successful, third-party backs with various designs may pop up at the local mall. We had a hands-on with the Lumia 820 in September.

5. Nokia Lumia 920

Nokia Lumia 920

The Lumia 920 is Nokia’s flagship phone for 2012. It will come in several bold colors and Nokia touts the 8.7-megapixel camera’s image stabilization and video recording features, as well as Nokia’s own mapping software. We had a hands-on with it in September.

6. Sony Xperia TL

Sony Xperia TL

Otherwise known as the “James Bond phone,” Sony’s flagship Android phone for the U.S. sports a 13-megapixel camera and a 4.6-inch “Reality” display with super-dark blacks. Inside, there’s a 1.5Ghz Qualcomm S4 processor and on the outside, there are a whole lot of buttons. We had a hands-on with this phone in earlier this month.

7. LG Optimus G

LG Optimus G

AT&T’s version of the LG Optimus G is different from the international model; AT&T’s unit has an 8-megapixel camera that is flush with the back of the phone. This is a big, boxy phone running Android 4.0 with some interesting customizations, like the ability to play videos semi-transparently behind other apps. Its standout feature, though, is its Qualcomm 8064 processor, which should be the fastest in the land.

8. Samsung Galaxy Note II

Samsung Galaxy Note II

Big and bold, the Galaxy Note II enhances the best-selling Galaxy Note with an even bigger 5.5-inch screen, better stylus support, a new camera app, and a faster processor. For guys with big hands (and we have some of these folks around our office), this will be the must-buy for the holidays. We had a hands-on with it when it was first announced.

9. Samsung Galaxy Express

Samsung Galaxy Express

Not all of AT&T’s new phones are on the high end. Think of the Samsung Galaxy Express as the Galaxy S III’s little brother and, hopefully, think of it as free or $49 with contract. This phone has a 4.5-inch, 800-by-480 screen, dual-core 1.5Ghz processor and Android 4.0 OS, and it should be a good pick for people looking to hit AT&T’s speedy LTE network on a budget. You can find out more in our hands-on.

10. Samsung Rugby Pro

Samsung Rugby Pro

The update to our Editors’ Choice rugged smartphone, the Rugby Pro can take a licking and keep on logging on. It’s waterproof and relatively shockproof, with a thick, rubberized casing. The Rugby Pro has a 4-inch, 800-by-480 screen, a 5-megapixel camera and LTE; you can get more details in our hands-on story.
