Waterproof Tech

You reach into your bag and discover that your water bottle has leaked or you find yourself caught in a downpour that’s left you and your bag soaked. Panic sets in. Your wallet and its contents can be dried out, you can always buy a new magazine, and documents can be reprinted, but what about those now-sodden electronic devices? Will you be doomed to spend hundreds replacing your beloved gadgets?

Sure, you can attempt to get a replacement. There’s that product warranty, after all. Unfortunately, you probably won’t get any sympathy from a customer service representative when you tell them the product’s demise was caused by water damage. Oh, and lying won’t help the cause either. The liquid contact indicator hidden on most devices will quickly reveal how your device met its end. That warranty may be as useless as that soggy phone.

So, what are you to do? Well, it may be too late for that gadget, but not its replacement or any new devices you may purchase. Perhaps it’s time to contemplate waterproofing your tech. You can buy cameras and phones that are already waterproof, or you can buy cases and laptop bags that will protect your devices from moisture. In fact, much of this gear will do more than protect against a springtime shower; some you can take right into the ocean, pool, or even bathtub. We rounded up 15 waterproof gadgets, bags, and cases to keep you and your valuable devices dry during the rainy season.

1. Under the Sea

Not only can these camcorders stand a few splashes of water here and there, they can actually record your underwater fun. No, they won’t survive James Cameron-esque depths, but they will capture footage of your snorkeling adventures or a day at the beach. The Sony Bloggie Sport HD Camera ($179.99, pictured) records in full 1080p HD. In addition to being waterproof at depths up to 16 feet, the Bloggie is also shock-proof (at drops up to 5 feet) and dirt-resistant. Like the Flip cams of yore, the Bloggie has a flip-out USB arm for simple video transfer and charging.

Kodak has also put out two of PCMag’s favorite waterproof pocket camcorders. The Kodak Playsport Zx3 was rated a 4 out of 5 and was our Editors’ Choice pocket cam in 2010. Waterproof at depths up to 10 feet, the camera can also capture 1080p footage and 5-megapixel still images. The 4-star-rated Kodak Playsport Zx5 Video Camera ($179.95), Kodak’s follow-up to the Zx3, features the ever-important autofocus feature. This is a great pocket camcorder on its own, but the fact that it’s waterproof is the Big Kahuna.

2. Snapping, Not Splashing, Away

Even if you get caught in a late-spring downpour, you can shake it off, knowing your digital camera is safe. The Editors’ Choice Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3
can handle more than just a few raindrops; this rugged outdoor shooter can withstand underwater depths of up to 40 feet. The 12.1-megapixel camera features great video options, GPS, a digital compass, a barometer, and an altimeter that will tell you the elevation and atmospheric pressure information of each photo. The Lumix DMC-TS3 is also freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and can withstand drops up to 6.6 feet.

If you like to keep your phone in your back pocket and you have more than once dropped it in the toilet, the Motorola Defy is the phone for you. The feature-packed, pocket-sized phone is perfect for those who are rough on their stuff. A sliding latch acts as the battery cover, preventing water from getting into the phone’s underbelly. PCMag dunked the phone in a foot of water while it played music and it continued to rock on without any problem.
