If it’s not already feverishly preparing its appeal, Samsung is likely drowning its sorrows with a Bloody Mary or five this morning. A California jury on Friday found that Samsung had infringed on various Apple design and utility patents with its tablets and smartphones and awarded Cupertino approximately $1.05 billion in damages.
Apple will likely have to wait a bit to get its hands on that billion-dollar check; the appeals process will probably drag on for some time. But before the jury returned its sweeping decision after just three days of deliberation, Apple and Samsung provided weeks of testimony about their business operations, internal discussions, and more. Much of it was mind-numbing legalese, but there were a few tidbits that piqued the interest of tech watchers and journalists alike.
We got the inside scoop, for example, on how much Apple and Samsung made from their device sales here in the U.S.; previously, we’d only heard global numbers. We found out just how much Apple wanted Samsung to fork over in order to settle this case (hint: it’s a lot). We learned that Apple and Samsung were likely never going to just kiss and make up. We saw an amusing side of Judge Lucy Koh, and learned that maybe Steve Jobs didn’t think those 7-inch tablets were “dead on arrival” after all.
