BARCELONA – I was surprised to see a booth for CAT, also known as Caterpillar, at MWC. I was even more surprised to see that it wasn’t to introduce the world’s first Android-powered forklift, but rather a rugged Android smartphone, presumably, for the kind of person who would drive an Android-powered forklift. We spent some time with it at the show.
Now, I’ve reviewed my fair share of rugged smartphones, and I have to say, the CAT B15 doesn’t look like any of them. Instead of dressing it up like a typical smartphone, with a black slab design, CAT goes all in, with a mixture of aluminum and rubber, and some yellow accents thrown in for a pop of color. I’ve never seen a smartphone with such utterly visible screws in the side of its casing before. This phone looks like a construction site.
Despite the heavy-duty materials, the phone feels surprisingly light. CAT doesn’t say whether the phone meets military spec 810G or IP67 qualifications, which are rugged specifications assigned to many other tough devices, like the Kyocera Torque. But the phone is waterproof in up to three feet of water for 30 minutes, impact resistant to nearly six feet, dust proof, and capable of withstanding extreme temperatures. You need to make sure all of the ports are secured for the phone to be fully waterproof, but that’s the case with must rugged phones so far. The CAT also supports wet finger tracking, so you can use still use it in the water.
Spec-wise, the CAT B15 is a lot like most other rugged smartphones out there – good but not great. It’s got a dual-core 1-GHz processor, along with what appears to be a completely stock version of Android 4.1.2 (Ice Cream Sandwich). There’s a 5-megapixel camera on the back, and a VGA shooter on the front. The 4-inch, 800-by-480 display is made from scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, and looks good, if not high end.
The CAT B15 is an interesting addition to the rugged smartphone space for its loud design, though it doesn’t appear to offer much in the way of new features. There’s no details about a release for the phone in the U.S., but it should be available overseas for around $450 next month.
