Facebook Home is coming, and you don’t need an HTC First phone to get it.

Facebook’s new Android home screen experience doesn’t hack the OS. It’s a launcher, part of a well-known category of apps that replace Android home and lock screens with more functional alternatives. It coexists with other Android skins like HTC Sense and Samsung TouchWiz, which is a good thing; as those experiences already integrate Facebook into your contacts, calendar and photo gallery. Facebook doesn’t need to re-invent the wheel here.

You can get Facebook Home preinstalled on the HTC First phone exclusively from AT&T; there may be more phones coming. We have a hands-on with the HTC First, which is going on sale April 12. The new launcher will also be available for several popular current and upcoming phones, though. If you have an existing Android phone, here’s how to get Facebook Home.

1. Own the right phone. Facebook Home is initially coming to the Samsung Galaxy S III , Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy Note 2, HTC One X+ and HTC One. It will almost certainly come to other Samsung and HTC phones running Android 4.1 or higher in the future, and possibly to other manufacturers as well. It probably won’t come to low-end phones.

2. Make sure your Facebook account is attached to your phone, to integrate contacts and calendars. To do so, go into Settings, then Accounts and Sync, then add an account. Choose Facebook as the option and enter your details. This will give your phone some Facebook integration even without Home.

3. Install the standard Facebook app, from Google Play.

4. Wait until April 12. Facebook Home won’t be available until then.

5. Go to Google Play on your phone and search for “Facebook Home.”

6. Download the app.

7. Launch the app. That should launch you into Facebook Home. You’ll need to enter your Facebook details.

8. Tap your Home button. You’ll get a box that says “Complete action using.” Tap Facebook Home, and Always.

There you go – now you have Facebook Home. If you want to remove it, go to Settings, Apps, choose Facebook Home and click Uninstall. It’s that easy.
