Most iPhone thieves stick to tried-and-true methods like using their hands to grab the Apple gadget from unsuspecting passersby. Not so for this Chinese man.
Photos of a brazen crime were posted online(Opens in a new window) by Shanghaiist.com. They show a man using chopsticks to stealthily retrieve an iPhone from a woman’s pocket. What’s more, the woman was riding a bicycle at the time of the incident, and didn’t even seem to notice!
If you thought picking up your California roll with chopsticks was a challenge, you could really learn a thing or two from this guy. He might be facing trouble with the cops, but at least he gets a gold star for originality.
The crime reportedly occurred in downtown Zhengzhou, located in north-central China. The perpetrator, who is surnamed Wang, turned himself in to local police on April 9 after photos of the crime appeared online. Wang later said he committed the crime to earn money for his young daughter.
In all seriousness, the theft of iPhone and iPad devices is on the rise, and has become so prevalent here in New York City that police have formed a special team dedicated to working with Apple to track down thieves. Officers are sharing the unique identifying numbers of stolen phones with Apple, which can track the device’s location regardless of the wireless provider to which the phone is registered. Police hope the partnership leads to the arrest of criminals who grab and resell victim’s sought-after Apple devices.
Meanwhile, one Brooklyn man recently took matters into his own hands and recovered his stolen iPhone using the oldest trick in the book — pretending to be an attractive woman and seducing the thief.
