Samsung on Sunday announced that rapper Jay-Z’s next album will be available exclusively on Galaxy devices three days before its official release.
The album, titled “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” will be available via a special Magna Carta app that hits the Google Play store on June 24. The first 1 million Galaxy S III, S4, and Galaxy Note II users who download the app will get early access to Jay-Z’s album at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on July 4, 72 hours before it is available to the general public.
Samsung made the announcement in a three-minute commercial that ran during Sunday night’s NBA finals. The ad (below) features Jay-Z in the studio putting the final touches on his album with producers Timbaland, Pharell, Swizz Beatz, and Rick Rubin.
Jay-Z doesn’t specifically mention Galaxy devices during the spot, though they are used and shown throughout. “The Internet is like the wild, wild west,” he says. “We need to write the new rules.”
In a statement, Samsung said its “next big thing” is revolutionizing the album launch.
“Magna Carta Holy Grail” is Jay-Z’s first full-length album since 2009’s “The Blueprint 3.” In the video, he said it explores the “duality” of navigating success and failure while remaining true to yourself.
This is not Jay-Z’s first partnership with a major tech firm. In 2006, he was featured in a commercial for HP computers(Opens in a new window), and in 2010 he partnered with Microsoft’s Bing to promote his book Decoded. Last year, meanwhile, he teamed up with Duracell on wireless charging. He also reportedly(Opens in a new window) invested in video app Viddy through his record label Roc Nation.
