SpareOnePlus: Hands On With the Phone That Lasts For 15 Years

LAS VEGAS—Hate having to recharge your battery halfway through the day? How about a phone that can last for 15 years? We got a chance to take a look at the SpareOnePlus at CES, which can indeed last for up to 15 years—on a single AA battery.

Virtually identical in design to the Editors’ Choice-winning SpareOne Emergency Phone , the SpareOnePlus adds a couple of key new features that make it even better equipped for emergency use. This time around, the phone includes a location-based service which identifies the exact location of the cell ID, accessible through a free smartphone app. Additionally, audible numeric feedback reads the numbers you dial as well as the numbers of incoming calls aloud. It also comes with a new talk-through, re-sealable waterproof bag with a humidity-proof seal. And unlike the plain white SpareOne, the SpareOnePlus is available in either black or silver, both of which have a translucent red battery screen.

All of the features from the original phone are still here. The phone is designed to work with a SIM card from any GSM-based carrier, but even without one, you can use it to make emergency calls to 911. And while it can last for up to 15 years if stored unused, actually battery life is closer to 10 hours of talk time. Other than that, this is as bare bones as cell phones get. It’s more for your emergency toolkit than everyday use.

The SpareOnePlus will be available early this year for $99.99—the same price the original SpareOne runs right now.

We were big fans of the original SpareOne, and the Plus model adds features that make it even better. It’s a safe bet for your zombie apocalypse survival kit, but check back with PCMag for a full review in the feature.
