10 Weirdest Things at MWC 2013

BARCELONA – It started off normal, with some big phone and tablet announcements from HTC, Huawei, LG, Nokia, Samsung, and ZTE. The HTC One managed to steal the show before it even really began. And Huawei and ZTE continued to ride on the buzz they generated at CES. But things began to shift as the show wore on. Strange products started to appear. Odd booths sprang up, seemingly out of nowhere. By Wednesday, Mobile World Congress had gotten flat-out weird.

This happened at CES as well. But at CES, most of the weirdness we encountered came from the gadgets themselves. At MWC it was a bit more insidious than that. Sure, I didn’t expect to see Android built into a desk phone or a portable data terminal. And I definitely didn’t plan on encountering an augmented reality children’s book or a bike-powered phone charger. But things really reached a fever pitch when I walked in on a mime applying makeup in the men’s bathroom. That’s right, a mime in the men’s bathroom. Eat your heart out, Diane Arbus.

This show also marks my first ever real-life encounter with parkour. If you haven’t seen it in person yet, well, I can’t suggest you do. But hey, anything to bring a crowd to your booth, right?

Overall, all the weird things I encountered helped balance out the show and kept me on my toes. Without all the offbeat products and moments, you’d just be reading a nonstop barrage of hands on stories. Oh wait.

So without further ado, here are 10 of the weirdest things from Mobile World Congress. Oh, and those augmented reality books at the end? I saw a rather makeshift demo of them on what appeared to be the outskirts of a different company’s booth. Afterwards I went to grab a sandwich close by, and by the time I came out they were gone.

1. Phone and Tablet Waterproofing Tower

The Liquipod Tower from Liquipel(Opens in a new window) applies a waterproof nanocoating to your phone or tablet while you wait. I can see this fitting in next to the kiosks in the mall where you can skin your phone.

2. Mime in the Men’s Bathroom

To be honest, I’m not even sure this guy was affiliated with the show.

3. Avatar Dating

Avatar Dating

Galaxy is a multi-platform, avatar-based chatting app(Opens in a new window). It places a specific emphasis on flirting and dating. If you’re into avatars, look no further.

4. Bike-Powered Phone Charger

Bike-Powered Phone Charger

The ReadySet bike from Vodacom(Opens in a new window) will charge your phone as you pedal away. But if you’re on a bike, how will you check your email?

5. Android-Powered Desk Phone

Android-Powered Desk Phone

The Tecdesk Smart 5500 is a desk phone. And an Android phone. It doesn’t even use a traditional phone line. Try fitting that into your pocket.

6. Parkour at HTC

Parkour at HTC

Parkour is just like walking, but crazy! I have to admit the appeal is lost on me. And unless HTC is planning to call its next phone the HTC Parkour, I don’t see how it fits in.

7. Android-Powered Personal Data Terminal

Android-Powered Personal Data Terminal

How about adding a little bit of Android to your PDT? With the Urovo V5(Opens in a new window), you can toggle between Android 2.3 and Windows CE 6.0. You know, in case you ever need to search the Web while you’re scanning barcodes.

8. State of Oregon Booth

Huh?

9. Electronic Pet Tracking

Electronic Pet Tracking

We’ve already reviewed the Tagg pet tracker, so I get that this is a thing. What I don’t get is why.

10. Nana Pocket

Nana Pocket

How do you stop the ebook’s relentless assault on traditional publishing? Put a bird on it. The Nana Pocket is a blank children’s book. Download an app to your iPhone, however, and you can populate the book with colorful cartoon characters like birds and puppies.
