The Week in Tweets: BlackBerry Outage

Were you hit by #Blackberrymageddon? This week, millions of BlackBerry users around the world saw their BBM messages and emails sent to one big pond of quicksand. Starting Monday, a massive three-day network outage spread around the world, leaving many users with no choice (or other apps) than Twitter through which to communicate and vent their frustration.

The outage hit Monday evening, with messaging and browsing delays in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina. RIM acknowledged the problem on its Twitter account and vowed to fix it, but no remedy came that day.

Instead, on Tuesday, the outage spread to users in the U.S. and Canada. RIM said the ongoing problems were caused by a core switch failure inside its network. As a result there was a huge backlog of messages, causing traffic jams and delays around the world.

On Thursday RIM co-founder Mike Lazaridis apologized for the ongoing outage and promised a remedy. He later said that the company had “restored full services,” though many users were still tweeting about service issues on Friday. Meanwhile RIM’s other co-founder, Jim Balsillie, said the entire company was working around the clock coming up with ways to compensate users. As RIM’s chief information officer, Robin Bienfait, noted in a region-specific update at RIM.com(Opens in a new window), in most parts of the world, BBM traffic is back up but browsing is temporarily unavailable; in Canada and parts of Latin America, everything is fully operational.

Analysts estimate that there are around 70 million BlackBerry users around the world; RIM has not yet commented on the official number of people affected by Blackberrymageddon, but people are demanding answers.
