Week in Tweets: Droid Bionic

Verizon Wireless this week released the Motorola Droid Bionic, but is it more compelling than what the iPhone 5 might have to offer?

The Droid Bionic is the first of its kind: a dual-core smartphone running on super-fast 4G LTE speeds. But it’ll cost you—$299.99 with a two-year contract—but PCMag’s lead mobile analyst, Sascha Segan, called the Droid Bionic that “most powerful Android phone you can buy today.” However, he warned that “something better will always be coming around the corner.” For more, see his full review.

The Droid Bionic comes with an 8-megapixel rear camera, 1080p HD video recording, 16GB of internal storage, and a 16GB microSD card that can expand up to 32GB. Apart from power and speed, the Droid Bionic is also unique in its gazillion accessories, outlined in detail here. For instance you can buy a $299.99 laptop dock that effectively transforms your phone into a weak PC, while a vehicle navigation dock for $39.99 flips the Droid Bionic into a car GPS system.

If it’s any measure of success, virtually every review we’ve seen compares the Droid Bionic to an iPhone. Laptop Mag’s(Opens in a new window) glowing review concluded that “the iPhone 5 isn’t out yet, but it already has stiff competition.” Josh Topolsky of The Verge(Opens in a new window) said it was a “fine phone,” but didn’t find that it offered a better experience than the iPhone 4. The headline of another Droid Bionic column by Segan says it all: 6 Ways the Motorola Droid Bionic Is Better Than the iPhone.

From what we can gauge in social networks and forums, consumers are now thrown in the difficult choice between getting the Droid Bionic right now, or waiting to see what Apple has in store. Will the Droid Bionic really live up to its tagline as the “one device that rules them all”—including Apple fanboys? Some early adopters are weighing in on Twitter.

The so-called iPhone 5 isn’t the only highly anticipated phone this year. Droid Prime, a rumored next-generation Nexus device from Samsung and Google, could debut Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich.

Actually, Engadget’s review(Opens in a new window) didn’t even mention the word “iPhone.” But most reviews we’ve seen agree that the Droid Bionic is no iReplacement for the iPhone 4 (or potentially, iPhone 5).
