iPhone 5

The iPhone 5( at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) is a marvelous phone. PCMag awarded it an Editors’ Choice, calling it the best iPhone ever.

“It takes the iPhone’s traditional advantages, like the well-designed consistent hardware and interface, amazing apps, and robust retail support, and literally extends them,” PCMag’s Sascha Segan wrote in his full review.

Many of those who got their iPhone 5 on Friday appeared to be quite pleased. But not surprisingly, some people have found features about which to complain. Why? Probably because they paid between $199-$399 on contract or $649-$849 unlocked. At that price, they want a perfect phone. One that uses a unicorn horn for an antenna and puffs fairy dust upon command.

Granted, there’s some of that in there: The iPhone 5 is the fastest iPhone PCMag has ever tested, thanks to the mysterious, Apple-designed A6 processor. Cygnett’s drop test showed that the iPhone 5 can take a beating, compared to other tests that have shattered screens throughout the years. (Nevertheless, the company’s point was that the phone should really be in one of Cygnett’s cases.)

But the iPhone 5 isn’t perfect. We’ve already run through some of the problems that users have had with iOS 6. Now, after a weekend of use, users have begun to uncover other hardware issues, ranging from the silly to the serious. (Of course, to some Apple fanatics – and technology journalists, we must admit -there is never anything “silly” about their criticisms. Ever.)

At least one of the complaints appears to be a valid bug or design flaw, however, which may impact other users. (And no, we’re not talking about Lightning.) It’s probably not as serious as the iPhone 4’s “deathgrip,” but may justify an exchange or two. Read on to find out.

1. Light Leakage

Light Leakage

Apparently, there’s a “widespread problem” of light leaking out around the white iPhone 5’s power connector. Supposedly, Apple will exchange the defective iPhone 5 for a new one.

2. Scratches

Scratches

It seems that every time a new iPhone is released, somebody complains of scratches. The problem is that some users are complaining of scratches that the phone had before it was even used(Opens in a new window).

3. Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi

A 26-page thread(Opens in a new window) on the Apple support forums indicates that users are having problems actually transmitting data via Wi-Fi. Are you among them?

4. Lightning Connector

Lightning Connector

Why should I have to pay to connect my new iPhone with legacy devices? Customers are less than happy with Apple’s new $29 and $39 legacy docking solutions, which add a 7.8-inch wire. Boy, that’s annoying.

5. Maps

Maps

The problem that users won’t let go away. It’s now reached “meme” status. Still, some Apple defenders are now claiming that Apple needed to release Maps to enable the same sort of crowdsourced support that Google Maps enjoys.

6. Black Bars

Black Bars

This is a pretty minor one, as the black bars that the iPhone injects on older, non-optimized apps aren’t really that obtrusive – nothing like an older app optimized for Android phones that’s been ported to a tablet, for example.

7. Weight/Price

Weight/Price

No, we don’t have a complaint with the weight of the new iPhone. But this annoying retweet keeps cropping up. Enough already!
