Most Anticipated Features in iOS 6

On Sept. 19, Apple began rolling out its latest iOS version, iOS 6, to “legacy” users: iPhone 3GS and above, the iPad 2 and up, and fourth-generation iPod touch and beyond. The new iPhone 5 will come pre-loaded with iOS 6, natch.

Apple unveiled iOS 6 at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June. Among the more than 200 new features are a revamped Maps app that replaces Google Maps, Siri on the iPad, as well as tight Facebook integration, and FaceTime video chat over a cellular connection. There’s also Passport, which is a digital wallet of sorts – but only for odds and ends like Starbucks coupons and boarding passes.

In its review of iOS 6, PCMag called it “a must-have download if you own a compatible device,” noting that some older iDevices wouldn’t be able to accommodate certain features. (For a list of what changed before and after iOS 6, check out Jill Duffy’s story.)

In all fairness, there’s a lot to like about iOS 6. Users tweeted from the notification bar, just because they could. Facebook is so tightly integrated that users can post status updates in just a couple of taps. And who doesn’t love the new bowling emoji? But consumers also had some valid concerns, like whether iOS 6 was consuming more data than iOS 5.

The update began rolling out at 1 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, and users eagerly started updating their iDevices. And then they waited. And they waited some more. Apparently Apple should have devoted its entire North Carolina data center to the task. Well, we can suppose it just heightened the anticipation. Read and find out what other things Apple users complained about. What about you?

1. The Wait

The Wait

Twitter was full of advice for those who endured the wait to upgrade, including trying to piggyback on work Wi-Fi to cut the download time. Patience, though, seemed to be the only viable solution.

2. Data Concerns

Data Concerns

Users who had heard the horror stories of LTE use and its effect on a user’s data plan began trying to figure out how to manage their data traffic. Android users snickered, again – well, those that had the latest version of the OS, anyway.

3. New Emojis

Wait – why would you want to do something like that?

4. Maps Hate

Maps Hate

Apple’s new version of Maps will mis-identify locations and route you incorrectly – at least according to map data providers like TeleNav, who weren’t part of the new Maps app. For more, see 6 Ways Google Maps Beats Apple iOS 6 Maps.

5. YouTube? Where’s My YouTube?!

YouTube? Where's My YouTube?!

Apparently some didn’t get the message that Apple removed the app from the native version of iOS 6 and moved it to its App Store.
