Epson BrightLink 585Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector Review

[ad_1]

The Epson BrightLink 585Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector ($2,199) is just one function short of being Epson’s most sophisticated interactive projector. What it lacks is the ability to interact with images using your fingers, which is the latest leading-edge feature. But touch-enabled projectors can be tricky to set up, so if you’d rather avoid the work, and are just as happy to interact with the image using pens instead, you can save some money and time with the 585Wi ($1,983.82 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window) .

Design and Features
The 585Wi shares most of its features with the Epson BrightLink 595Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector, our Editors’ Choice premium ultra-short-throw interactive model. Both models share the same size, weight, and image inputs, and they’re each built around the same three-chip LCD engine with WXGA (1,280-by-800) resolution and a 3,300-lumen brightness rating. Each comes with a wall mount and two interactive pens, and except for interactive touch, they offer identical interactive features. Performance
The key feature the 585Wi shares with any ultra-short-throw projector is its ability to project a big image from close to the screen. For the 92-inch image (measured diagonally) I used in my tests, the front of the projector was just 10 inches from the screen. According to Epson, the supplied mount allows you to project images ranging from 60 to 100 inches, with the front of the projector 2.5 to 12.2 inches from the screen.

Quality for data images was excellent on my tests, with the 585Wi sailing though our DisplayMate(Opens in a new window) suite without any serious problems. Colors were vibrant, saturated, and bright in all modes, and color balance was excellent in almost all modes, with neutral grays at all levels from black to white. I saw a slight green tinge in the brightest shade of the brightest mode, but it wasn’t enough to count as a problem. More important for most data images is that the 585Wi held detail well in my tests, with white text on black highly readable at sizes as small as 12 points, and black text on white maintaining easy readability even at 6.8 points.

Video quality was also good for a data projector, making it easily good enough for long sessions up to and including watching a full-length movie. Color quality was good to near-excellent overall, hurt only by a somewhat low contrast ratio; I didn’t see any posterization (shading changing suddenly where it should change gradually) even in the most demanding test clips. The projector also did a good job with shadow detail (details based on shading in dark areas). I saw some noise in one test clip that tends to show that, but it was far less obvious than with most data projectors. Like the 595Wi, the projector does not support 3D.

Conclusion
The Epson BrightLink 585Wi Interactive WXGA 3LCD Projector is the obvious—and less expensive—alternative to the Editors’ Choice Epson 595Wi, as long as you don’t need interactive touch functionality and plan on permanently installing the device. If you need an interactive WXGA projector that’s small and light enough to carry with you, consider the Ricoh PJ WX4141NI , which is our Editors’ Choice for portable interactive projectors, or the Hitachi BZ-1 —another top pick—which is only slightly larger and heavier.
