Say it ain’t so, iPad mini. Alas, the time has come for everyone’s favorite shrunken-down iPad to head to that great, big electronics recycling pile in the sky. And that’s about as ceremonious as the send-off for Apple’s tiny tablet is going to be, as Apple has quietly decided to stop selling the original device in its online store.
News of the iPad mini’s departure was first reported by 9to5Mac(Opens in a new window). Admittedly, it was well past time for the first-generation tiny tablet to go, seeing as Apple is already up to the iPad mini 3 at this point. However, Apple did lower the price on the original iPad mini for those who wanted a cheaper iOS experience.
“The non-Retina iPad mini model is no longer available. Now all models of iPad mini and iPad Air have 64-bit Apple-designed CPUs and high-resolution Retina displays,” an Apple spokesman told Computerworld(Opens in a new window).
To clarify, Apple’s iPads now all run either its A7 or A8X processors, now that the first-gen iPad mini and its comparatively ancient A5 processor has been put out to pasture.
Of course, if you’re still clamoring for that first-generation iPad mini, all hope is not yet lost. You can still buy(Opens in a new window) a refurbished version, or get one from various third-party retailers. Now that the iPad mini has been discontinued, it seems that some retailers are really trying to push them out the door: A Groupon deal(Opens in a new window) has them down to $180, whereas a Cowboom promotion puts them down to a mere $115 shipped(Opens in a new window).
