AT&T Locks Apple SIM Cards on New iPads

The idea behind the Apple SIM in the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 was to let you easily switch wireless carriers with just a tap in the settings. The technology was pretty much universally heralded as an awesome idea. But, of course, not everyone is a fan.

MacRumors(Opens in a new window) on Friday first reported that the nation’s second-largest wireless carrier, AT&T, will lock the SIM to its network as soon as you sign up for a month of service. We wish we could say this wasn’t true, but, alas, a new Apple support document has confirmed the disappointing news.

“When you choose AT&T on iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, AT&T dedicates Apple SIM to their network only,” the support document(Opens in a new window) states. “If your Apple SIM becomes dedicated to a specific network and you want to choose from other carrier programs, you can purchase a new Apple SIM from an Apple Retail store.”

In a statement to Re/code(Opens in a new window), an AT&T spokesman said that just the SIM card will be locked, not the actual device. So, you’ll be able to switch carriers as long as you buy a new Apple SIM, which will set you back $10.

T-Mobile and Sprint, which also support Apple’s multi-carrier SIM, do not lock it to their networks. Verizon doesn’t support the multi-carrier SIM at all.
