Apple today announced(Opens in a new window) that the cellular versions of the iPad mini, as well as the fourth-generation iPad will be available in China this Friday, Jan. 18.
Both devices will be sold via Apple Stores, the company’s website, and authorized third parties.
The Wi-Fi versions of Apple’s latest tablets arrived in China on Dec. 7, while the iPhone 5 was released there on Dec. 14. Now, Cupertino is expanding its tablet lineup by releasing iPads that will tap into China’s mobile networks.
The iPad mini with Wi-Fi + Cellular comes in black and slate or white and silver for $459 (16GB), $559 (32GB), or $659 (64GB). The fourth-gen iPad with Retina display will set you back $629 (16GB), $729 (32GB), or $829 (64GB). Apple is also selling the iPad 2 in China for $399.
The iPad mini and fourth-gen iPad were released in the U.S. in October. The smaller tablet features a 7.9-inch screen that is comparable to the iPad 2 in terms of resolution. The fourth-gen iPad, however, has the boosted Retina display and a beefed-up processor.
China is a rather large dot on Apple’s radar. The company’s summer sales slipped in the country, a glitch CEO Tim Cook attributed to seasonality, and the lack of new iPad numbers. But by October, Cook told analysts that Apple had a “fantastic quarter” as it relates to China. Sales of the iPad were up 45 percent in the third quarter, while iPhone sales jumped 38 percent, he said.
“That brings us to a full year fiscal year revenue number of $23.8 billion for China which is really phenomenal,” Cook said during an Oct. 25 earnings call(Opens in a new window). “When you think about it, that’s up over $10 billion year on year, [or 78 percent], and Greater China now represents about 15 percent of Apple for the fiscal year and so we’re extremely happy with how we’ve done in China.”
“We are continuing to invest in our own retail stores there, we continue to expand distribution with channel partners as well, and we continue to see it as a extremely exciting market with more and more people wanting Apple product,” Cook said.
