Google is making it more convenient for schools around the country to integrate tablets and educational apps into the classroom.
The search giant on Wednesday officially launched tablets running Google Play for Education(Opens in a new window), a version of the Google Play app store specifically designed for K-12 schools in the U.S.
Google first announced plans for Google Play for Education at its I/O developer conference in May, and has been testing the new educational offering in beta for the past several months with thousands of students and more than 50 schools.
“What’s been clear from their feedback is that teachers and IT administrators need time-saving solutions to help their students learn in the classroom and smooth the transition to new curriculum standards,” Rick Borovoy, product manager for Google Play for Education, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) Wednesday. “They’ve asked for something easy to set up and manage, that helps them find educational content they can trust, and that doesn’t break the bank.”
Schools can choose from three different “classroom ready” tablet options: the 7-inch Nexus 7, which is available now, and the 10-inch Asus Transformer Pad, or the 8-inch HP Slate 8 Pro, both of which will be available early next year. The tablets start at $229 per device, and schools will need to pay another $30 per tablet for management capabilities.
From there, schools can explore and discover teacher-approved educational apps and filter the offerings by subject matter, grade, and standard, including Common Core. Google Play for Education offers bulk purchasing, allowing schools to buy and instantly distribute educational apps, videos, and other educational content to students’ Android tablets via the cloud.
“We’ve been working with top developers to bring the best educational apps to Google Play for Education, including ClassDojo(Opens in a new window), Socrative(Opens in a new window), Explain Everything(Opens in a new window), NearPod(Opens in a new window), and many more,” Borovoy said.
Developers of educational apps for Android can use the Google Play Developer Console(Opens in a new window) to mark their offerings for inclusion in Google Play for Education. Doing so identifies the app as suitable for the U.S. K-12 market, and queues it for approval.
“If you’ve built an Android app that would be awesome for schools — or even have an idea for one — now’s the time to jump in,” Shazia Makhdumi, head of strategic education partnerships for the Google Play team, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) Wednesday. “We’ll put you one click away from getting purchased and installed by entire school districts.”
