Tablet shipments have increased about 11 percent since last year, but are down from the first quarter, according to new stats from IDC.

Shipments dropped about 1.5 percent from the first quarter of 2014. But IDC expects that tablets will see overall growth in 2014 compared to 2013, just at a slower pace.

“As we indicated last quarter, the market is still being impacted by the rise of large-screen smartphones and longer than anticipated ownership cycles,” Jean Philippe Bouchard, IDC research director for tablets, said in a statement. “We can also attribute the market deceleration to slow commercial adoption of tablets. Despite this trend, we believe that stronger commercial demand for tablets in the second half of 2014 will help the market grow and that we will see more enterprise-specific offerings, as illustrated by the Apple and IBM partnership, come to market.”

As for the breakdown of tablets shipped by manufacturer, Apple — to little surprise — took top honors for worldwide shipments in the second quarter of 2014. That said, its total shipments for this quarter (13.3 million) are down a bit from the same time period last year (14.6 million), and its market share has eroded from 2013’s 33 percent to 2014’s 26.9 percent.

Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the drop during an earnings call earlier this week, and he too believes that Cupertino’s new enterprise deal with IBM will help boost iPad sales going forward.

Among the top five tablet vendors for the quarter, only Lenovo managed to grow its market share to any significance year of year, jumping up from 3.3 percent last year to 4.9 percent this quarter. Fourth-place Asus popped up a mere 0.1 percent, with the rest of the vendors — second-place Samsung and fifth-place Acer — dropping in market share over the last year.

“Until recently, Apple, and to a lesser extent Samsung, have been sitting at the top of the market, minimally impacted by the progress from competitors,” said IDC research analyst Jitesh Ubrani, in a statement. “Now we are seeing growth amongst the smaller vendors and a levelling of shares across more vendors as the market enters a new phase.”

The numbers speak for themselves: What IDC counts within its “Others” category has grown from a market share of 37 percent in the second quarter of 2013 (16.4 million shipments) to a market share of 44.4 percent in the second quarter of 2014 (21.9 million shipments).
