DreamWorks aims to entertain children and adults with its animated films. But the studio is now branching out to engage kids through their favorite pastime: technology.
In partnership with electronics maker Fuhu, which sells the Nabi brand of tablets for kids, DreamWorks Animation will reveal its new DreamTab tablet at next week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
“Fuhu grabbed our attention when they came on the market because they single-handedly made a quantum leap forward in revolutionizing the kids tech space,” Jim Mainard, DreamWorks Animation’s head of digital strategy, said in a statement. “As their company grew, we saw an incredible opportunity to join with them to take the overall tablet experience to a whole new level.”
Together, the companies are launching a kid-friendly slate with academic features (reading, writing, and arithmetic), as well as DreamWorks-branded games and applications, like the “Be an Artist” program, which helps kids learn to draw their favorite Shrek, Madagascar, and How to Train Your Dragon characters. But DreamTab will also allow streaming content from content rivals Nickelodeon, Disney, and Cartoon Network.
For more advanced users, email and texting options allow kids to stay in touch with their parents.
“As we look to further innovate the kids tech space and expand our mission to give families the freedom to safely learn, play, and grow through technology, it’s crucial that we continue to identify new ways to evolve the landscape and bring original and creative experiences,” Fuhu CEO Jim Mitchell said.
Launching in the U.S. this spring, the DreamTab will be available in 8- and 12-inch models with 16GB or 32GB of storage. It will run Android 4.4 KitKat with Fuhu’s Blue Morpho operating system overlay, and comes with a stylus and NFC compatibility.
DreamWorks did not reveal pricing for the DreamTab, but the New York Times(Opens in a new window) reported that it will be under $300.
International consumers will have to wait until later this year to purchase the DreamTab.
Fuhu’s Nabi tablets are for kids ages 3 to 14, and they house educational games and apps inside of a colorful, durable plastic casing. For more, see PCMag’s review of the Fuhu Nabi 2 tablet.
