The first two Android Wear smartwatches should arrive at your doorsteps shortly: the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live. But how do you get these devices up and running? We got some hands-on time with both devices at Google I/O, so here’s how to get started.

1. First, you’ll need to download the Android Wear app(Opens in a new window) on your smartphone and turn on your smartwatch. If your watch doesn’t have a physical button, like the LG G Watch, place it in the charging cradle while power is connected. You’ll also want Bluetooth enabled on your smartphone.

2. Your watch will ask you to select a language, and will then show you a prompt to start up the Android Wear app.

3. Next, you’ll have to pair your devices. Tap through the prompts on your Android device until you get to a selection screen. Tap the device in the list of available Bluetooth devices that has the same code as the one displayed on your watch. After all, you don’t want someone else to see your notifications.

4. Confirm on your watch and Android device and tap through the next few steps on your phone. For most people, the watch will begin to update its software. Google engineers told me that this can be a pretty large update, so you’ll probably want to do it while your phone is connected to Wi-Fi.

5. Depending on your settings, the Android Wear app may prompt you to enable notification access. Just follow the prompts, check the box next to Android Wear in Notification Settings, and you’re on your way.

6. If you don’t have Google Now enabled, the Android Wear app will prompt you to enable it. If you’re a Google Apps user, you may find that you don’t have to access to Google Now. Not to worry: simply log in to Google with your personal Google account, or toggle to your personal account. Once Google Now is enabled on your phone, it will work on your smartwatch.

7. Speaking of, your smartwatch should be done updating by now. Though each watch is different, you’ll run through an Android Wear tutorial that explains the basics of what you can do with your smartwatch. The system is fairly intuitive, but you’ll want to pay attention to get the most out of your new device.

Remember that your smartwatch is really just an extension of your phone. The Android Wear app contains important settings, and your smartwatch needs apps installed on your phone in order to do everything. 

According to Google Play, the $229 LG G Watch is scheduled to start shipping on July 3, while the $199 Gear Live will leave the warehouse on July 8. The third Android Wear smartwatch that was at I/O – the Motorola Moto 360 – does not have a release date yet, but is expected later this summer.
