Topping tech headlines on Tuesday were reports that Apple will introduce its next-gen iPads at an event on Oct. 22.

According to AllThingsD, the event will focus on new iPads, but attendees will likely get a glimpse at the new Mac Pro and OS X Mavericks, too. ATD was not able to confirm a location, but Apple’s Cupertino headquarters or the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco are two main contenders.

Meanwhile, Samsung last night unveiled a curved smartphone, dubbed the Galaxy Round, which sports a 5.7-inch display. As its name suggests, the Galaxy Round is rounded on both sides of its Full HD Super Flexible AMOLED display, allowing it to rock back and forth while on a flat surface. In fact, similar to the Moto X’s active display, Galaxy Round owners can gently rock their Round smartphone to one side or another – known as Roll Effect – for a quick view at the time and alerts.

In other news, the creators of the Nest Learning Thermostat have their sights set on a new household appliance—the lifesaving, but much-maligned smoke detector. The new device, dubbed the Nest Protect, is a Wi-Fi-enabled combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector that dispenses with the tired routine of dealing with these often annoying devices.
