The first tablets in Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy Tab S line are now available for pre-order in the U.S.
Unveiled Thursday evening, the 8.4-inch Wi-Fi Tab S is priced at $399.99 while the 10.5-inch version will set you back $499.99. Pre-orders kicked off this morning on Samsung’s website(Opens in a new window), and the device will officially go on sale in July at Samsung.com, Amazon, Best Buy, Fry’s, Office Depot, Office Max, PC Richard & Son, Sears, TigerDirect, and Walmart.com. Later this year, the LTE version will arrive on Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
Running Android 4.4, Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab S models are thinner than the iPad Air ($389.99 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) with a 2,560-by-1,600 Super AMOLED display.
“We know consumers want the best screen when purchasing a tablet, and as an undisputed leader in display technology, we’ve brought our industry-leading Super AMOLED screen to the Tab S for an unrivaled viewing experience in both connected and Wi-Fi options,” Gregory Lee, president and CEO of Samsung telecommunications America, said in a statement.
PCMag’s Lead Mobile Analyst Sascha Segan got some time with the new Galaxy Tab S 10.5 and 8.4 earlier this week. He noted that the screen on the Tab S “has the same stunning effect that it does on Samsung’s flagship smartphone.”
That screen should come in handy, as the Galaxy Tab S is one of the select few Android devices in the U.S. to offer Netflix HD content viewing.
Both the 8.4-inch and 10.5-inch versions include an 8-megapixel main camera with LED flash and a 2.1-megapixel shooter on the front along with 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, and a microSD slot supporting 128GB cards. They measure 6.6mm thin and the 8.4-inch version weighs less than a pound, making it Samsung’s thinnest and lightest tablet.
Other features include Kids Mode for easy access to kid-friendly content; a built-in fingerprint scanner for logging in and making PayPal payments; Multi Windows, which lets you open two windows at once; and SideSync for making and receiving calls from your tablet. It also comes with a slew of goodies, including one year of free Gogo in-flight Wi-Fi access and a three-month subscription to Audible.
