Rumor: HTC Prepping Nexus 9 ‘Volantis’ Tablet

[ad_1]

It might be the very last of the “Nexus”-branded tablets that Google offers up, but HTC’s rumored 8.9-inch “Nexus 9” tablet — otherwise dubbed the HTC Volantis — is inching closer to reality, according to Android Police.

The blog is reporting(Opens in a new window) that the Volantis does in fact exist. “We feel confident in our information,” the site says; in other words, multiple sources have been spilling the beans about Volantis.

It’s expected that the tablet will go on sale sometime around the fourth quarter of the year, and the Volantis will likely accompany the release of Android L (or Android 5.0. Insert your own clever sweets-themed named here.)

As for the specifications, here’s what Android Police thinks the tablet is going to have (though, as always, they’re subject to change). The 8.9-inch device will sport a 2,048-by-1,440 display, with 281 pixels per inch. To put that number in context, it’s just slightly higher than a Retina iPad’s 264 pixels-per-inch density.

A 64-bit Nvidia Logan processor (Tegra K1) will serve as the tablet’s brains. It’s unclear whether any modifications will be made to the Tegra K1’s default clock speed of 2.5 GHz (all of 0.2 GHz higher than that of the non-64-bit iteration of the Tegra K1 processor), so we’ll have to wait to get final specs for that one. The tablet will also come with 2GB of RAM, in addition to either 16 or 32GB of internal storage.

The tablet itself should weigh anywhere from 14.74 to 15.1 ounces, which is a bit more than the 10.2-ounce Nexus 7 . On the plus side, the tablet will be made out of aluminum instead of plastic, which likely factors into the increased weight.

Naturally, the price will differ depending on the storage capacity. Early suggestions indicate that the 16GB version will sell for $399 and the 32GB version will go for will $499, with LTE connectivity likely coming in the form of an undisclosed add-on; Android Police thinks that throwing LTE into the mix could jump the price of the tablet as high as $600.

“With rumors that the Nexus 6 was canceled in light of the Android Silver program, it’s important to be cautious when approaching any information regarding future Nexus devices. That said, a source familiar with Volantis tells us that the hardware already exists, and that the tablet is already being toted around by some at Google. Additionally, the first devices pegged for the Android Silver program aren’t expected until 2015, so it would make sense that Google is prepping a Nexus to launch Android L,” Liam Spradlin writes.
