Whoops. It’s been the not-so-secret rumor as of late that Nvidia is working on a tablet follow-up to its controller-and-screen combination device, the Nvidia Shield. Well, that rumor just got a bit more confirmed with the early leak of most of Nvidia’s press materials for said device.

According to a number of promotional images, obtained by the website Videocardz(Opens in a new window), the Shield tablet is expected to be available for purchase on July 29. Assuming nothing changes from these alleged leaked images, the tablet — powered by a 2.2-Ghz, quad-core Nvidia Tegra K1 chip and 192-core Kepler GPU — will come in two different retail versions.

The first, a Wi-Fi-only tablet, will run with 16 gigabytes of total storage and set a potential purchaser back $299. The second, a 32-gigabyte version with LTE connectivity, will cost $399. Nvidia will sell covers for both tablets for an extra $39 — yes, they’ll allow you to prop up your tablet (and we assume they’ll shut off the tablet’s screen when you move the cover over it). It also appears as if Nvidia will be selling a $59 supplemental controller for the tablets as well, which you’ll also be able to use with your Nvidia Shield device.

The Shield Tablet will use an eight-inch, IPS display running at a resolution of 1920-by-1200 pixels. As one might expect, it comes with built-in, front-facing speakers, as well as front- and rear-facing cameras (five megapixels each). It’ll also support two-stream wireless-n connectivity on the 2.4- and 5-Ghz bands (no wireless-ac, alas), in addition to Bluetooth 4.0 LTE.

Those put off by the tablets’ internal storage capabilities might be pleased to know that the Shield Tablet will also come with a microSD slot, which will be able to support an additional 128 gigabytes of storage. Rounding out the feature list includes built-in connectors for micro-USB 2.0 and mini HDMI, as well as a standard 3.5mm stereo headphone jack.

As noted by ExtremeTech(Opens in a new window), the tablet bears a bit of a resemblance to HTC’s One and One M8 smartphones, due to aluminum speaker grills that sandwich the tablet’s screen. It only weighs a total of 390 grams, or 0.89 pounds, which indicates that the entirety of the tablet is likely not made out of metal.

The aforementioned controller will use Wi-Fi Direct to connect up to the Shield Tablet or Shield. According to Nvidia, that should reduce the lag between controller and client significantly, half that of what you might see if you were connecting up via Bluetooth.
