HP and Tupac have a lot in common; they both churn out postmortem material.
Twitter was buzzing this week with talk of HP’s zombie tablet. The company said last month that it would kill webOS-based devices, and then deeply discounted the TouchPad, causing the device to fly off virtual shelves. Demand was so high that HP said it will produce one more round of TouchPads.
HP slashed the price on the TouchPad to $99 for the 16GB model and $149 for the 32GB model. After the discount was announced about two weeks ago, the tablet basically sold out overnight. PCMag East Coast News Editor Chloe Albanesius was able to snap up one of the 32GB TouchPads, but others weren’t so lucky. The company claimed there would be more TouchPads coming, but it didn’t know when that would happen.
That changed this week when HP announced that it plans to manufacture a “limited quantity of TouchPads with webOS” during the fourth quarter, which closes on Oct. 31. However, the tablet won’t be available for purchase for several weeks.
“Despite announcing an end to manufacturing webOS hardware, we have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand,” Mark Budgell, an HP spokesperson, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window).
Budgell said he’s unsure how many units HP will make, and although supply isn’t unlimited he claimed there will be “enough for everyone.”
But is it really the end of the line for the undead tablet, or HP eventually decide to resurrect the TouchPad? Take a look at what people were saying about the deal, and the TouchPad, on Twitter.
