Thinking about buying a Microsoft Surface or another Windows 8 gadget? Redmond is now offering $200 if you trade in your iPad at a nearby Microsoft Store.
Microsoft will trade you(Opens in a new window) a “gently used” iPad 2, 3, or 4 for a miniumum of $200, which you can use for a new Surface or “other cool products at the Microsoft Store.”
Right now, the Surface RT starts at $349, while Surface Pro starts at $799. The iPad trade-in offer runs until Oct. 27, but given that Microsoft is set to unveil its next-gen Surface tablets on Sept. 23, you might want to wait until then to see what Redmond has up its sleeve.
The deal does not apply online, and it only allows for one trade in per customer. Value will be determined by electronics buy back firm CExchange.
Whether or not there are any iPad owners who want to ditch their Apple tablet for Surface remains to be seen. Microsoft has been going after the iPad in recent marketing campaigns – criticizing iPad for the lack of full multi-tasking and available ports. But Surface has struggled to make a dent in the market, with the iPad streamrolling over the competition quarter after quarter. A few Android tablets – from the Nexus 7 to the Kindle Fire HD – have managed to snatch a bit of market share away from the iPad, but Surface has not had the same luck.
Price was likely one deterrent, with the 128GB Surface Pro initially running $999, higher than some laptops on the market. As a result, Microsoft has given its Surface lineup a price cut in recent months. Will that remain the case with the new lineup coming next week? Stay tuned.
Apple, meanwhile, is largely expected to launch its next-gen iPads before the end of the year. In 2012, the iPad mini and 4th-gen iPad made their debuts in October, one month after the iPhone 5 launch.
