There may be more at stake during May’s U.K. election than just a desk at 10 Downing Street.

All 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) will receive an iPad Air 2 and laptop from the Parliamentary ICT team upon their return after the general election.

ComputerworldUK said(Opens in a new window) the plan will cost £200,000 per year for five years—about £1,538 per MP over the next Parliament session. But the move is actually part of a strategy to save £3 million a year by transitioning MPs and staff from paper hard copies to high-tech devices, Computerworld said.

The recommendation was originally proposed by the House of Commons Commission in September 2013, and approved by MPs on the Administration Committee.

Introduced as a parliamentary pilot in 2012, iPads are currently in use by 209 MPs, according to Computerworld, which said Apple’s “secure, SIM-enabled” tablet was chosen for its “good life expectancy” and capacity for supporting future upgrades.

Plus, the “competitively priced” iPad Air 2—which costs £400 to £560(Opens in a new window), depending on storage size—fit the committee’s £100-to-£600 price range.

“iPads are integrated with current business processes,” MP John Thurso told Computerworld. “A move away from the Apple operating system (iOS) at this time would incur costs to change these processes.”

Not everyone is an Apple fan, however. Shadow Cabinet Office minister Chi Onwurah criticized the choice of iOS, saying she would have preferred a “device agnostic” policy.

Citing recent controversy(Opens in a new window) over Conservative MP Nigel Mills’ Candy Crush obsession, Onwurah worried government members will be more focused on iPad entertainment than national and international issues. An Android-based option might also be cheaper, she said.

The House of Commons did not immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment. There is no word on what brand or type of laptop the MPs will reportedly receive this summer.
