Ever wonder what war looks like from a dog’s-eye-view? This fall’s Call of Duty: Ghosts(Opens in a new window) swaps the Ghillie suit for a military service dog, which players can control remotely as a recon scout and deadly weapon.

The four-legged killing machine made his debut in a new game trailer, released Saturday, ahead of this week’s E3 gaming conference.

Along with its new canine companion, the newest iteration in the long-running Call of Duty series also now offers single-player mode, as well as a new ghostly setting to explore.

“Featuring an all-new world, new story, new characters and new experiences, all powered by a new, next-gen engine, Call of Duty: Ghosts is not only a stunning leap forward for the mega-hit franchise, but also showcases what’s possible on next-generation consoles,” Activision boasted in its weekend announcement.

In an “unprecedented” move, the game maker revealed an early look at Ghosts during a live 30-minute all-access broadcast(Opens in a new window), two days before the start of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Participants saw the underwater “Into the Deep” mission(Opens in a new window), a recovering world(Opens in a new window) in “No Man’s Land,” and got their first look at the newest, and furriest, member of the team, Riley. The telecast also featured interviews with Infinity Ward developers, as well as Oscar-winning screenwriter Stephen Gaghan, who wrote the script for Ghosts.

Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said in a statement that his company was simply looking out for those fans who couldn’t travel to Los Angeles for the event.

“All our fans aren’t able to be here and share in the moment,” he said in a statement. “So, since our fans can’t come to E3, we’re bringing E3 to them. This year we’re making sure the Call of Duty community is first in line to see Call of Duty: Ghosts as we kick off what’s going to be a historic week.”

The game developers’ attention to detail is on par with feature-length film animations, which focus on each individual hair, scratch, and bruise — even making the dirt beneath a character’s fingernails apparent, Activision boasted.

“Our new tech is allowing us to deliver an absolutely stunning next generation Call of Duty experience on Xbox One, PS4 and PC, but that’s not all,” Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin teased. “The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions will reap the benefits of our new tech as well, which we believe will make this the most striking Call of Duty game ever created, regardless of what platform our fans choose.”

Call of Duty: Ghosts will hit shelves on Nov. 5; check out the official trailer below.
