An Xbox One update scheduled for Tuesday has been pushed to later this week, according to(Opens in a new window) Larry Hyrb, director of programming for Xbox, also known as Major Nelson.
The February update for the Xbox One ($200.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) will add support for USB keyboards and port over the onscreen battery power indicator for controllers from the Xbox 360 platform. The first major software update to the console released last November will also give users tools for managing storage on the Xbox One, add improvements to “the quality of Kinect voice so commands become more fluid and responsive over time, as well as more refined controls over download queues and other software installation parameters,” Microsoft said in announcing the update last week.
Like the Xbox 360, Redmond’s newest console will receive regular updates. In addition to the added features that console users will see, the February release will include “lots of behind-the-scenes updates for developers building apps and games for Xbox One,” the company said.
With the added control over download queues, gamers will be able to create separate My Games and My Apps installation lists, enabling them to pick the order in which they want them to load. There will also be a boot progress indicator to better track updates while they load, Microsoft said.
Meanwhile, Xbox One chief product officer Marc Whitten on Tuesday also offered some details(Opens in a new window) about the next big update coming on March 4 over at the Xbox Wire site.
The March update will focus on improvements to the Multiplayer and Party playing modes on the Xbox One, Whitten said.
“While we’re thrilled to launch the February update this week, we’re already looking ahead to March. We’ve prided ourselves on having the best multiplayer service for Xbox 360 and we’ve listened to your feedback about the features you want to see on Xbox One and Xbox Live. We’ve heard your feedback and the team has been working overtime to deliver updates that will significantly improve the multiplayer and party experience on Xbox One,” he said.
Here’s the breakdown of new Xbox One and Xbox Live features and improvements you can expect in March, quoting Whitten:
- Get to your friends list faster. The friends list will be front and center on the homepage of the Friends app. Click the Social tile on Home, or say “Xbox, go to Friends” to see who’s online and what they’re up to. From there you can quickly send messages and get into a party.
- Party chat will be turned on by default. When you party up, chat audio will be turned on by default.
- Chat with friends playing different games. Party chat will be separated from people playing your game, so you can chat with your friends who are online or you can chat with everyone playing the game.
- We’re adding an “Invite friends to game” option to your multiplayer titles moving forward. Similar to Xbox 360 titles, this will appear inside a games’ menu and offer a simple and quicker way to set up your multiplayer battles. Selecting “Invite friends” will let you invite friends to your game and party.
- We’re adding “Recent Players.” This is a simple list that shows you Xbox Live members you’ve recently played with, making it easier to stay in touch with people, or add new friends after your multiplayer battles.
Also coming next month is the highly anticipated release of the team-based, online multi-player title Titanfall, which is set to drop March 11. Last week, Whitten noted that the March 4 multiplayer and party mode improvements were being timed to “help make Titanfall the must-have game for this generation.”
