British Indie Film Released Exclusively on Microsoft’s Xbox

In a bid to leverage the power and reach of its Xbox platform in new ways, Microsoft will release an independent British film exclusively on its gaming console.

The low-budget film, Pulp(Opens in a new window), is centered loosely around a group of comic book geeks pulled into the criminal underworld—the perfect fodder for the audience of gamers and movie fans who make the Xbox community so robust.

“Microsoft might not seem like the obvious partner for an indie comedy, but the film industry has changed,” the film’s co-director, Adam Hamdy, said in an interview(Opens in a new window) with the Telegraph. “The Xbox 360 can instantly distribute Pulp to millions of U.K. customers, and publicize the release in ways that simply aren’t possible traditionally.”

According to the BBC(Opens in a new window), Microsoft plans to release other films as Xbox exclusives in the future.

In addition to the exclusive release, the film also has a promotional tie-in(Opens in a new window) through which fans of the film who record a review (presumably positive) of the film on YouTube can be entered into a contest to win up to $750 worth of Xbox games. So far, on the film’s official YouTube channel(Opens in a new window) there are already a number of “example reviews” talking up the film, but, as of this writing, no apparently independent reviews from viewers hoping to snag the gaming prize.

The slightly raunchy trailer (below) for the title is already up on the film’s website, and subscribers can watch the entire feature instantly via Xbox Live(Opens in a new window) in standard definition for 1120 Microsoft Points ($14.75), or in high-definition for 1420 Microsoft Points ($17.75).
