If you’re a fan of zombies, the number of “I hate zombies, kill them all, run run run” titles on the recently released Xbox One and PlayStation 4 consoles have been somewhat lacking – save for Dead Rising 3, of course, but we’ve all already played that style of game plenty of times on the Xbox One’s predecessor.

DayZ creator Dean Hall might be looking to change things up a bit, as a recent interview with Gamereactor confirms that the developer has been in “extensive” talks with Microsoft regarding porting the popular open-world zombie game to the Xbox One. And it’s definitely possible that the game might also see the light of day on the PlayStation 4 at some point:

“We’d certainly consider release on any feasible platform with a realistic publishing model,” said Hall, in an interview with Gamereactor(Opens in a new window). “It seems like currently both of the next-gen consoles should provide an environment we can develop inside.”

Before you get your hopes too high that you’ll be running around a fairly abandoned world with 50 of your closest, zombie-fearing friends, we should clarify that Hall hasn’t actually talked to anyone from the PlayStation side of things just yet. And Hall himself confirms that it’s still “too early to say at this point” whether DayZ could or would successfully find a second (or third) home on either console. Still, hope is better than nothing?

“The next-gen consoles show very exciting promise. I’m hopeful that they can deliver on that. An important part of that, from my perspective, is encouraging and supporting third-party creative development to bring the “edginess” of PC creative development into the console. I think if the role of Kinect/voice expands to where it is desired it could do some awesome things,” Hall said.

If you haven’t heard of DayZ, and are questioning why this maybe-yes, maybe-no might even be news, then you might be a rarity among gamers. After all, 200,000 eager DayZ fans ponied up $30(Opens in a new window) for an early access version of the title within the first 24 hours of its release. Within three weeks, that number had ballooned up to 875,000; within one month, a million gamers(Opens in a new window) — that’s one million people paying for what amounts to a work in progress, and creating a ton of hilarious DayZ YouTube videos(Opens in a new window) in the process.

Zombie survival: Kind of a big deal.
