Contrary to Internet chatter that sprung up amidst comments from COO Peter Moore, Electronic Arts isn’t done with”offline” games.

In a Wednesday blog post(Opens in a new window), Moore offered a “quick clarification” to comments he made to Engadget(Opens in a new window) at Gamescom.

At the conference, Moore told the blog that EA no longer ships offline games. “It just doesn’t happen,” he said. “Gamers either want to be connected so that your stats and achievements or whatever you do certainly reflect who you are, or you want the full multiplayer experience on top of that. We don’t deliver offline experiences anymore.”

The interview caused some buzz on the Web, which included “some misinterpretations,” Moore said today.

Moore clarified the company’s policy, explaining that most modern games are “online” in some way — many connect in online multiplayer modes, while others include online services for periodic content updates. Others, still, are downloaded through digital delivery methods like Origin or the App Store.

“The reality is, the Internet and social connectivity touches every one of our titles today — and has for several years,” Moore wrote.

“What that does NOT mean is that every game we ship will require an online connection,” he continued, adding that many, if not most, EA games include single-player, offline modes available without an Internet connection. “We know that’s something many of our players want, and we will continue to deliver it.”

Moore also cleared up misperceptions surrounding plans for free-to-play games: While many of EA’s most popular franchises (Battlefield, Need for Speed, FIFA, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Plants vs. Zombies, Madden NFL, Command & Conquer) are available in free-to-play mode, not all titles will include that option.

“We will continue to explore new free-to-play experiences for our franchises when we believe there is gamer interest and a cool new game we can build,” Moore said.

Microsoft encountered a similar backlash when it announced that its upcoming Xbox One console would require an online connection to work. Ultimately, Redmond reversed course.

Electronic Arts last week unveiled a number of new and updated games at Gamescom, including Battlefield 4 and the EA Sports flagship title FIFA 14.
