Electronic Arts this week wowed the crowd at the 2013 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco with a live demo of Battlefield 4, the newest version of its wartime first-person shooter title.

EA-owned developer Dice said the game will arrive this fall for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. According to Slashgear(Opens in a new window), it will not be available for the Wii U, but is expected for the upcoming PS4.

Excited gamers don’t have to be in California this week to catch a glimpse of the upcoming title, though. EA released a whopping 17-minute gameplay trailer (below), complete with foul-mouthed soldiers and intensely realistic visuals, set to the paradoxical tune of Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”

“Battlefield 4 is a genre-defining action blockbuster made from moments that blur the line between game and glory,” according to the official Battlefield 4 website.

The 17-minute “Fishing in Baku” video provides an exclusive look at the title’s “dynamic destructible environments, epic vehicular combat, and the chaos of all-out war,” Dice said.

After four iterations, the Battlefield experience could become tired, but Battlefield 4 provides some new features to keep players interested. According to The Escapist(Opens in a new window), players can strategize better by commanding squadmates toward specific targets in a gunfight. Additionally, social leaderboards keep track of scores and ranks users among their friends.

“Battlefield 4 is a seminal moment for the series and for us at Dice,” the company said in a blog post(Opens in a new window). “We have long been known for our award-winning multiplayer. This time around, we are bringing the best elements of our multiplayer into the single player campaign.”

The result: “Huge environments, a playground of destruction, access to an arsenal of vehicles, and the ability to direct squad mates — all within the single player campaign,” Dice said, calling Battlefield 4 the company’s most human, dramatic, and believable game yet.

Battlefield 4 is available now for pre-order(Opens in a new window). Gamers can pick up the $60 standard edition for PC, PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360, or the $70 digital deluxe version for PC download only. Those who pre-order will get a premium expansion pack.

Can’t wait for the autumn release? Battlefield 3 Premium members and registered owners of Medal of Honor Warfighter limited or deluxe editions can join the Battlefield 4 beta. Those who pre-order the new digital deluxe version on Origin will also get early access. Dice promised more details “at a later date.”
