Buyer beware: If you’re picking up a fairly popular device as a holiday gift, especially if you’re buying it for your kids, it might be worth your while to ensure that said device hasn’t been previously owned, operated, or filled with pornography.

You read that right.

In what might be this year’s best tale of holiday shopping gone wrong, a Virginia family recently purchased a Nintendo 3DS from a local Wal-Mart for their eight-year-old son. The kid pulled it out, played some games, and took a few pictures with the device. Pretty innocent, right?

Unfortunately, when the son and other young family members went to go pull up the images they had shot, their pictures weren’t the only ones in the 3DS’ storage. As you might expect, the other pictures that had been taken with the device were decidedly not of a G-rated nature — and there were a dozen or so of them.

“It was a shocker because we had family here, and there were a lot of kids here,” said father Tom Mayhew, in an interview with WAVY News 10(Opens in a new window). “The kids were the ones that discovered those pictures.”

A little more investigating by the family uncovered that the naughty images were all time-stamped with an early-December date. They had purchased the 3DS – seemingly new – on December 23. While they had first suspected that Nintendo was at fault for the porn that was loaded onto the device, it’s more likely that the 3DS in question was likely purchased by someone else, used, and returned. Wal-Mart seemingly never checked its contents nor adequately marked the device as having been previously used.

According to WAVY News 10, Wal-Mart’s corporate office has yet to respond to a request for an interview.
