Gamers are apparently excited to get their hands on the 25th anniversary edition of Madden NFL.
According to Amazon, that version of the game is now the No. 1 selling pre-order sports video game of all time on the site, with New Yorkers the most eager to get playing.
Amazon released a “Madden Heat Index,” which charted the top 10 cities that are pre-ordering the game. Following New York was Chicago, Seattle, Houston, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Charlotte.
The game’s official release is scheduled for Aug. 27; those who pre-order the anniversary edition – which runs $99.99 on Amazon – get access to the full 2013 regular season of NFL Sunday Ticket on the PC and mobile devices, even if they don’t have cable. The standard edition, without NFL Sunday Ticket, is $59.99.
Amazon didn’t release exact pre-order numbers, saying only that “it would take more than two football teams to bench press every Anniversary Edition of Madden NFL 25 we’ve pre-ordered, so far.”
Meanwhile, “in the time it would take for all pre-orders of the Anniversary Edition to watch each game offered on NFL Sunday Ticket this season, Madden cover athlete Barry Sanders could run the length of 15 billion football fields,” Amazon said.
Madden NFL 25 breaks its numbering convention (this year should be Madden NFL 14) in order to embrace the franchise’s rich, 25-year history. In PCMag’s review of the game, we found that “it’s quite possibly the most realistic Madden to date and just as much fun as it was in 1988, [while] deep franchise and career modes and online gameplay options round out this excellent offering.”
Barry Sanders is on the cover of the PS3 and Xbox 360 version, while Adrian Peterson is on the cover of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One option.
