Microsoft’s Internet Explorer team on Wednesday announced it has teamed up with fitness and nutrition site DailyBurn to bring a whole new workout experience to users’ living rooms through the Xbox.

When you visit the DailyBurn website using Internet Explorer on your Xbox, you’ll now be able to sync your phone or tablet to more easily interact with the site. This means you can view real-time workout stats, control your routine, and set weight goals from your smartphone or tablet, without interrupting the workout video streaming to your TV.

To make sure as many users as possible have access to the new cross-device workout experience, Microsoft is currently offering all Xbox Silver users one free month of IE to take advantage of sites like DailyBurn. Usually, Microsoft requires an Xbox Live Gold membership for access to IE on the Xbox. In addition, DailyBurn is offering all Xbox IE users two months free access to all online workouts and nutritional advice.

When you’re about to start a new DailyBurn workout through IE on your Xbox, the site will ask if you’d like to connect a companion device. To do so, you’ll simply need to enter a URL shown on the screen into your device’s Web browser, or scan a QR code.

Once you connect your smartphone or tablet, messages are sent between Xbox and your device to ensure everything is synched up. Since this all happens through the Web, the second-screen experience works on any smartphone or tablet.

For Microsoft, the partnership with DailyBurn was about showcasing the type of formal second-screen experiences that are possible on the Web today.

“Over the last few years, we’ve seen an explosion of scenarios where people are multi-tasking on one device while consuming content from another,” Chewy Chong, senior product manager of developer relations for IE, wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window) Wednesday. “Our partnership with DailyBurn is just the beginning of real-world examples popping up that demonstrate the potential of companion web scenarios.”

According to recent data from The NPD Group, multi-tasking users are increasingly splitting their attention between the television set and their laptops, tablets, smartphones, and other second-screen devices. But despite broadcasters’ efforts, consumers aren’t widely using second-screen devices to access apps specifically designed for the TV programs they’re watching.
