Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was the best-selling video game console in the U.S. for a 30th consecutive month in June, according to new data from the NPD Group, but the forthcoming Xbox One, which will launch this fall, is already poised to overtake its predecessor.
In a Friday announcement(Opens in a new window) on its Xbox Wire, Microsoft reported that it sold 140,000 Xbox 360 units in June, and total retail spend on the platform reached $197 million during the month, the most for any console in the U.S. But Xbox One ($200.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) pre-orders aren’t looking too shabby either.
“Xbox One pre-orders are trending ahead of Xbox 360 pre-orders during the same time period and have already sold out at most major U.S. retailers,” Microsoft said.
Meanwhile, Sony’s next-generation console is also in high demand as gamers gear up for an exciting holiday season. Pre-orders for the PlayStation 4 ($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), which is also slated for release later this year, are going quickly at major retailers around the country, including GameStop and Best Buy, according to reports.
June also marked the Android-powered Ouya’s first month of retail sales, which NPD industry analyst Liam Callahan said were “relatively light” for a new system.
“This may be due to the lack of a major marquee title driving consumers to seek out the console, low awareness due to Ouya being a new brand, or low inventory volume due to manufacturing constraints,” he said. Though the Ouya reportedly sold out on Amazon shortly after its debut, the reviews weren’t very positive.
Overall, sales of new hardware, software, and accessories fell 15 percent to $593.3 million in June, according to the NPD Group. Hardware sales saw the steepest declines, falling 30 percent to $142 million while software sales slid 10 percent to $296.1 million, and accessory sales dropped 9 percent to $155.2 million.
These figures represent new physical retail sales, which account for roughly half of total consumer spend on games. The firm estimates that used and rental sales totaled $118 million while digital format sales brought in an impressive $544 million, bringing total U.S. video game sales to around $1.2 billion in June.
The top 10 games of June were:
1. The Last Of Us (PS3)
2. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
3. Minecraft (360)
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops II
5. NBA 2K13
6. Injustice: Gods Among Us
7. Donkey Kong Country Returns
8. Deadpool
9. Battlefield 3
10. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)
