Minecraft Arrives On PlayStation 3 Tuesday

PlayStation 3 owners, get your pixelated pickaxe ready, because Minecraft is heading to your living room console.

Tomorrow, game maker Mojang will release its massively popular PC and mobile game for PS3 players in North America.

“At first, you’ll probably build simple structures to protect against nocturnal monsters,” Mojang’s Owen Hill wrote in a blog post(Opens in a new window). “Later on, you might work with your friends to create wonderful, imaginative things.”

According to Hill, Minecraft: PS3 Edition comes with all of the same features included in the PC/Mac, iOS/Android, and Xbox 360 versions.

“They’re pretty much identical to play, and will be developed in tandem from now on,” he wrote.

Console users will also find downloadable skins and texture packs — maybe even PS-themed content — on the PlayStation Network shortly after release.

Versions of Minecraft for the next-generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as the PS Vita are under development; though no specific release dates have been announced, Hill said to expect the titles “sometime next year.”

“The game is running on both Xbox One($200.00 at eBay)(Opens in a new window) and PS4($799.95 at Amazon)(Opens in a new window), but there’s a lot more work to do on both. No dates for either yet,” developer 4J Studios tweeted(Opens in a new window) earlier this month.

The PS3 price tag has not yet been revealed, but the Xbox 360 version is $20.

Minecraft, which is based on the premise of breaking apart and re-placing blocks, has sold more than 30 million copies — more than 13 million of which are PC sales, according to developer Jans Bergensten(Opens in a new window), who tweeted the milestone news on Friday. The Xbox 360 version, meanwhile, has sold 10 million copies(Opens in a new window) to date.
