Mojang this week confirmed that its next game, dubbed Scrolls, will debut in beta on June 3. The title has a lot to live up to, though; it is only the second title from the makers of the massively popular Minecraft.

Players use the power of creatures, spells, and ancient machines to duke it out with others, developing an army and deploying forces by using various scrolls.

Scrolls is a long time in the making, according to(Opens in a new window) PCMag’s sister publication, Geek.com, which said Mojang first unveiled the full-featured Scrolls two years ago. Since then it has been in the alpha stage, but on Monday, Mojang will finally release a beta version.

In a blog post(Opens in a new window), Mojang said Scrolls will be available for $20 (or £13/€15, depending on where you live) and work on PC and Mac.

In Scrolls, users build a collection of parchments in the form of playing cards that allow them to summon and enchant creatures, create buildings, and cast spells to play against A.I. or human players. The premise is simple: Earn gold, buy new scrolls, continue to defeat enemies. Ranked matches even pit the best against the best.

The game serves as a huge departure from Mojang’s Minecraft; Scrolls ditches the 8-bit world of building blocks in favor of smoother, Magic: The Gathering-like play.
