Topping tech headlines on Thursday, New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón are teamed up with various state and local officials for a “secure our smartphone” (S.O.S.) initiative.
The coalition is poised to analyze the trends associated with gadget thefts, investigate the possibility of a “kill switch” for stolen devices, and study how device theft impacts phone makers’ decisions. The announcement came as Schneiderman and Gascón met with representatives from Apple, Motorola, Samsung, and Microsoft Thursday in New York for a “summit” on smartphone safety.
In other news, Foursquare users can now “re-live” their old check-ins with the new Time Machine feature. The function lets users visualize all of their past check-ins and discover new places. Foursquare even provides a custom infographic with stats about your visits, shareable on Facebook and Twitter.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy has stopped yelling and dropped its all-caps policy. Historically, Navy messages have been formatted in capital letters, but officials are now allows for upper- and lowercase letters. Why the sudden change of heart? According to the Navy, lowercame messages provide a more readable format, and is more in line with “Web 3.0” technologies. The Navy is actually developing a new messaging system called Command and Control Office Information Exchange (C2OIX), scheduled to go live in August.
